Gartner Selects Senvol as “Cool Vendor” in Additive Manufacturing

Stamford, CT – May 18, 2017 – Senvol has been selected as a “Cool Vendor” in additive manufacturing by Gartner. To be selected for such distinction, the vendor must be considered innovative or transformative for products, services or initiatives. Marc Halpern, Research VP of Engineering and Design Technologies at Gartner, states, “Senvol is cool because its embedded knowledge of additive manufacturing gives designers and engineers unprecedented choices to design parts that can deliver much more value to customers at lower cost. Senvol may revolutionize engineering design practices as the knowledge of 3D printable materials in its software and databases accelerates manufacturers’ confidence in industrial 3D printing.” Halpern continues, “Senvol is already becoming the most authoritative source of materials behavior that factors the combination of the 3D printer used and the properties of the materials being printed to deliver desired behaviors of 3D printed parts.” Gartner’s definition of a Cool Vendor is a company offering a technology or service that is: • Innovative — enables users to do things they couldn’t do before. • Impactful — has or will have a business impact, not just technology for its own sake. • Intriguing — has caught Gartner’s interest during the past six months. Vendors do not apply to become Cool Vendors. Instead, nominations come directly from Gartner analysts who are familiar with the topic area or market space and the vendor landscape. To be selected as a Cool Vendor, Gartner analysts must have spoken with multiple customers actually using the technology to make sure the product works as advertised and verify they are getting value from the solution. Senvol President Zach Simkin commented, “As the additive manufacturing industry continues to mature, the importance of providing accurate data increases. Whether material properties, process parameters, or feedstock characteristics data, Senvol is focused on serving this growing need. We’re excited to be named a Cool Vendor and are pleased that Gartner has recognized Senvol’s ongoing contribution to the industry.” Jim Hare, Research VP at Gartner, reports that “vendors are not selected as Cool Vendors simply because they have interesting technology. It is mostly because of the growth and success of their company in using technology differently to solve customer problems resulting in tremendous traction.” Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT) is the world’s leading research and advisory company. The company helps business leaders across all major functions in every industry and enterprise size with the objective insights they need to make the right decisions. Gartner has more than 13,000 associates serving clients in 11,000 enterprises in 100 countries. To read more about Gartner’s Cool Vendor analysis, please visit its website. Design-2-Part Magazine Interviews Senvol

New York, NY – October 4, 2015 – Mark Shortt, Editor for Design-2-Part Magazine, recently interviewed Senvol President Annie Wang on the topics of data for design engineers, as well as creating design rules for additive manufacturing. Below is an excerpt from the interview: Data for Design Engineers Senvol develops information tools for additive manufacturing that include the Senvol Database, a 3D printing database of more than 1,000 industrial additive manufacturing machine and material entries. Users can search the database by more than 30 fields, including machine build size, machine price, material type, and material tensile strength. “Design engineers already use the database a lot, especially on the materials side,” she said. “Let’s say they have a certain design that they’ve already designed for a part that already exists, and they know that they want to make that part in Inconel 718. They can then go to the database and say, ‘Okay, what are all the Inconel 718 materials that are available to me in additive manufacturing, and what are those material properties?’ “We also have some design engineers who look at the materials section in a different way. They’ll say, ‘This is the range of tensile strengths that I’m looking at, or hardness that I’m looking at, or Young’s modulus that I’m looking at,’ and they put that in, and it filters through all the materials and tells you which materials fit that description. So you don’t have to look at it by material type; you could really look at it property by property. “The other thing is that after they’ve found the right material, the design engineer can also very quickly look at and see what machines are available. So what machines work with those materials that they’re looking at? And if they wanted to get a part made, they could call up a service bureau and specifically ask, ‘Do you have this machine? Do you have this material?’ and be able to get test parts made.” Creating Design Rules for Additive Manufacturing Senvol is one of several organizations recently awarded a grant for the America Makes project, ‘A Design Guidance System for Additive Manufacturing. ’ The project, which also enlists the aid of Georgia Institute of Technology, Siemens Corporate Technology, Lockheed Martin, MSC, and GKN Aerospace, among others, seeks to address gaps and deficiencies that have been identified in the additive manufacturing design-to-print workflow. “It’s a really big challenge and we’re really excited about the project,” Wang told D2P. “In additive manufacturing, the design rules are very different from conventional manufacturing. An engineer who’s designing something that’s meant to be machined, or injection molded, or cast would have an inherent understanding of what they need to be aware of. For example, if you’re designing something for machining, you’re thinking about, ‘How many faces am I machining, where am I going to put the jigs?’ et cetera. “But for additive, the design rules are just completely different. And it’s not just different because it’s additive, but it’s also very different depending on what machine and what process you use. So the rules for SLA, or stereolithography, also known as photopolymerization, are going to be totally different from powder bed fusion, also known as SLS, or selective laser sintering. “Because the design rules are so different because it’s...

Senvol Presents at RAPID Conference

Long Beach, CA – May 20, 2015 – Annie Wang and Zach Simkin, Senvol’s Co-Presidents, presented at the RAPID Conference yesterday. The RAPID Conference is the premier additive manufacturing conference in North America. The presentation, titled “Selecting the Most Cost-Effective Location for Additive Manufacturing Production,” detailed how AM production facilities have different cost structures in different locations around the world, and how these differing cost structures can lead to a competitive advantage for AM production. The results of a case study that Senvol conducted for the Government of Canada were shared. The case study analyzed and compared the AM production cost structures in five countries (United States, Canada, China, United Kingdom, and Mexico). Numerous relevant cost variables (e.g. AM machine, consumables, labor, energy, real estate, post-processing) were examined. The analysis showed how each cost variable is location-dependent – for example, labor rates are lower in China than in the U.S. – and how each cost variable contributes to the total cost of the final AM part that is produced. A framework was presented that manufacturers and service bureaus can use to analyze the cost structure of an AM production facility and determine the most cost-effective location. In addition to yesterday’s presentation, Senvol Co-President Annie Wang also gave a live demo of the Senvol Database at the America Makes Live Theater today. During the demo, Wang showcased how the database works by fielding live inquiries from audience members. The RAPID Conference was held from Monday, May 18 through Thursday, May 21 at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in Long Beach, CA. For more information, please visit the RAPID website. Senvol Presents at RAPID Conference 2014

Detroit, MI – June 11, 2014 – Annie Wang and Zach Simkin, Senvol’s co-Presidents, presented to a standing-room only crowd of over 200 attendees at the RAPID Conference today.  The RAPID Conference is the largest additive manufacturing conference in North America. The presentation, “Determining Cost-effectiveness of Additive Manufacturing,”  discussed an overall strategy that details how to identify and determine which parts are commercially viable candidates for additive manufacturing. The presentation outlined the framework and discussed the specific process steps that are necessary to conduct this analysis. Questions that were addressed included: How do I analyze my company’s current cost structure (including secondary costs, such as inventory, downtime, and shipping)? How do I compare those costs to the cost of additive manufacturing? When commercially viable parts are identified, how does my company know whether to produce those parts in-house or to use a third party supplier? How do we properly present these findings to the business decision-makers in our organization? Senvol works with several Fortune 500 manufacturers in industries such as aerospace, oil & gas, consumer products, and automotive. Specific case studies from this work were shared with the audience. In addition to its own presentation, Senvol was specifically highlighted by both of the conference’s opening keynote presenters on Monday. The RAPID Conference was held from Monday, June 9th through Thursday, June 12th at the Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. For more information, please visit the RAPID website. Senvol Published in Wohlers Report 2014

New York, NY – May 7, 2014 – Senvol’s article titled “Cost-Benefit Analyses for Final Production Parts” was published in the 2014 Wohlers Report. The article details two analyses that Senvol conducted. The first case study details an example of a part (from General Electric’s Measurement & Control division) that can be cost-effectively produced using AM. The second case study details an example of a part (from Johnson Controls, Inc.’s Automotive division) that is not cost-effective for AM. For the part that is not cost-effective, the analysis shows why the part was not cost-effective, and what AM variables (e.g. machine cost, build speed, material cost) would need to improve in order for the part to become cost-effective.
