Fort Belvoir, VA – September 19, 2018 – Earlier today the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) announced that it has awarded a grant to Senvol for a project titled “Additive Manufacturing Sensor Fusion Technologies for Process Monitoring and Control.”
Senvol’s work will focus on demonstrating that the data from various additive manufacturing (AM) in-situ monitoring sensors can be analyzed to accurately predict a part’s mechanical performance. Senvol ML, Senvol’s data-driven machine learning software for AM, will be used to conduct the analyses.
Senvol President Annie Wang commented, “The goal of this project is to demonstrate that parts of equivalent mechanical performance can be made on two different additive manufacturing machines, and that a suite of in-situ monitoring equipment is able to collectively provide sufficient data to monitor the process signatures and ensure that the additive manufacturing process will indeed yield equivalent parts.”
During the project, Senvol will implement advanced in-situ monitoring systems of various modalities into one or more laser powder bed fusion AM machines and will analyze the data collected from these systems using: (1) Real-time data processing algorithms (e.g. computer vision algorithm) to extract data (i.e. process signatures), and (2) Data-driven machine learning algorithms to relate material properties and mechanical performance to process signatures.
By applying the Senvol ML software’s sensor fusion techniques to analyze the data collected, Senvol will be able to determine which suite of in-situ monitoring sensors is optimal to install into laser powder bed fusion AM machines.
DLA is the United States’ combat logistics support agency, managing the global supply chain – from raw materials to end user to disposition – for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, 10 combatant commands, other federal agencies, and partner and allied nations. DLA manages nine supply chains and about 5 million items, which includes the supply of 86 percent of the military’s spare parts.
